What is Hong Kong Style French Toast?
It’s a unique version of French toast featuring Chinese milk bread or white bread layered with peanut butter and then fried in a lightly sweet egg batter. It’s a bit like a peanut butter French toast sandwich. So good!
The french toast tastes sweet and savory! After cooking to golden brown it’s drizzled with sweetened condensed milk over the top. You can eat it as a dessert or a breakfast food. It’s traditionally served in Hong Kong cafes and is best enjoyed with Hong Kong milk tea.
Why You Will Love This HK Style French Toast
- Better Than Traditional French Toast: HK French toast combines the simple flavors of a peanut butter sandwich with egg-soaked bread fried in a pan.
- Enjoy This Classic Chinese Dish at Home: You can easily make this French toast with condensed milk with simple ingredients you likely already have in your kitchen.
- Versatile Recipe: Serve it up anytime for breakfast, as a snack, or dessert.
Ingredients
Here’s a look at the simple ingredients to make peanut butter French toast. Check the recipe card for the full list with quantities of each.
- White bread: This is an easy-to-find and very accessible substitute for the classic milk bread used to make this sandwich in Hong Kong. For the best flavor, I recommend using brioche bread or any Japanese shokupan, which is Japanese-style white bread.
- Peanut butter: Spread on the inside of the sandwich! Creamy peanut butter is the classic option but crunchy will work too. You can also use almond butter or even Nutella if you want to try a different flavor though peanut butter is the traditional version.
- Butter: Melted in your skillet to cook the sandwich adding flavor and helping it brown.
- Condensed milk: Drizzled over the top of your peanut butter French toast.
- Egg: The main ingredient in the batter used to make the batter for soaking the bread. It adds a fluffiness to the bread when it’s cooked.
- Sugar: Sweetens the egg batter.
- Vanilla: Added to the egg batter for a bit of natural sweetness and a warming aroma to the French toast sandwich.
Variations
- Add More Layers: If you want you can use three slices of bread to make an extra tall version of this dish.
- Cut It In Squares: Serve them up for a group by preparing the sandwich and then cutting it into four squares before dipping it in the egg batter and cooking.
- Serve With Syrup or Honey: If you want to skip the condensed milk you can also use syrup or honey though this isn’t the authentic way to serve it.
How to Make Hong Kong French Toast
Step 1. Make the egg batter by mixing one egg, sugar, salt and vanilla. Keep mixing until no egg white is showing.
Step 2. Spread peanut butter on white bread (add to both slices if you want extra peanut flavor).
Step 3. Put bread together and soak in egg batter on both sides. While over medium heat, add a slice of butter to the pan.
Step 4. Fry the toast for 3-4 minutes on each side until both sides are golden and the edges are crispy.
Step 5: Top with condensed milk and enjoy with some milk tea. Hope you enjoy it!
Expert Tips
- Use Soft White Bread. This will give you a delicate fluffy texture that’s the signature characteristic of this sandwich.
- Use Ingredients as Listed. For the most authentic Hong Kong style French toast and traditional flavors.
- Soaking the Bread. It just needs to be long enough for the bread to soak up the egg mixture.
- Removing the Crusts. I prefer to keep the crusts intact but you can trim them off before spreading the slices with peanut butter if you prefer.
Recipe FAQs
A Hong Kong milk tea is a classic dish for breakfast at a Hong Kong cafe! You can also enjoy it along with Baked Pork Chop Rice or Hong Kong Style Macaroni Soup. To offer a variety of desserts enjoy it with some Egg Tarts, Hong Kong Mango Pancakes, and Mango Mochi for a bit of variety.
HK French toast is truly best enjoyed it freshly made. It doesn’t take too much time so I highly recommend making it fresh. If you happen to have some left and you don’t want to waste, store them in a container. Reheat it in a heated skillet with a bit of butter added or in an oven or toaster oven until hot.
