There are many different types to make the egg omelette by adding different proteins or more vegetables. You can even replace the rice with noodles to make a similar dish. This omurice egg recipe is more simple than others! The egg omelette is slowly cooked and very thin. Then the rice is wrapped inside.

It’s even better when served with omurice sauce on the top for extra delicious flavor!

    Ingredients

Ingredients to make omurice with rice, peas and carrots, oil, garlic, ketchup, soy sauce, onion and chicken on the table in bowls.

    Fried Rice Mixture

    • Rice: You will need to use cooked rice. Leftover rice is best for frying as it cooks up better than warm or freshly cooked rice. Try to make it the day before when possible or use rice you have left from another meal.
    • Chicken: Or you you can use any other protein you prefer or even leave it out all together.
    • Aromatics: A quick saute of onion and garlic layer in some deeper flavors right from the start.
    • Veggies: Frozen peas and diced carrots make this recipe super simple.
    • Ketchup: Gives our fried rice it’s classic tomato flavor.
    • Soy sauce: Deepens the savory flavors of the rice.
    • Oil: Used for frying the vegetables and rice. You can use any neutral oil such as vegetable or canola oil.

    Expert Tips

    • Adding Protein: The chicken flavor helps enhance the flavor of the rice. In addition, it will make the dish more filling and delicious.
    • Use Leftover Rice: This is crucial to a fluffy Japanese omelette rice. Leftover rice is drier than recently cooked rice which gives your fried rice a much better texture.
    • Storing: Enjoy your Japanese rice omelette freshly made for the best flavor. If you happen to have leftovers and don’t want to waste you can store it in the fridge for up to three days. Reheat it in the microwave in short intervals until heated through.
    • Smooth Omelette: After whisking your eggs, you can put it through a strainer. This will ensure your eggs will be extra soft and smooth.

    Recipe FAQs

Can I make my omurice omelette vegetarian?

Sure thing! Swap the chicken bouillon for a vegetable one and leave out the meat protein. If you want to add more protein you can add some cubes of firm tofu or other plant-based protein.

What do you serve with omurice?

Omurice is often served with ketchup on top or a demi-glace sauce. It’s meant to be a main meal and if you need a side or appetizer to serve with it I suggest trying this Hijiki seaweed salad, Yaki onigiri, or this Japanese cream stew for a heartier dish.
